PROJECT SUMMARY

BORN of the OCEAN is a character driven documentary that chronicles the intimate story of three couples as they seek to create the perfect environment for the birth of their child.

COSTA RICA OCEAN BIRTH SEGMENT
(Principle photography completed)

The first couple profiled are Amy and Raymond, an American couple who are the creators and caretakers of Dolphin Quest, a jungle retreat center on the shoreline of the Gulfo Dulce (Sweet Gulf) region of Costa Rica. This pristine haven is remotely located in the southwestern corner of Costa Rica, bordering the Pacific Ocean, and is only accessible by boat.

Amy, seeking a gentle and natural method in which to birth her first child, is drawn by the appeal of giving birth while partially submerged in warm water. She studies as much as she can about the safety and effectiveness of water birth and decides that she wants to birth her child into the warm ocean water in front of their jungle home.

Raymond and Amy prepare by having an ocean catamaran custom designed and built for them to help facilitate the birth, and invite their friends and family to witness the special event.

Reverie Productions took a small production crew to Costa Rica to conduct interviews with Raymond, Amy and their family and document the birth.

In the early morning hours of New Year's Day pure magic unfolded. Shortly after a magnificent sunrise, the crew captured the events as Amy, her mother behind her for support, gently gave birth to an eight-pound boy in the warm buoyant ocean water. Raymond watched breathlessly as his child emerged and unfolded in front of him. He cradled the newborn for a moment in his hands, still underwater. Then, when the time felt right, he raised him to the surface and the tiny baby took his very first breath of air.

This footage is considered by many to be the first professionally documented ocean birth in history.
