DOLPHINS
Minds in the Water is
an award-winning documentary film which reveals that dolphins
are highly developed, incredibly intelligent and socially
bonded marine mammals that deserve to be studied in their
natural wild environment. This film was the first to examine
the controversial issues of marine mammal captivity and
the unnecessary slaughter of dolphins in commercial fishing
operations. DOLPHINS Minds in the Water has screened
in numerous countries worldwide and won dozens of international
awards. It was screened at the opening ceremonies of the
International Dolphin and Whale Conference in Hawaii.
FEATURING
INTERVIEWS WITH:
Sam
LaBudde - Recipient of the Goldman
Award for Environmental Achievement. Sam is a research biologist,
environmentalist and journalist working with Earth
Island Institute. LaBudde made world news when he went
"undercover" on board a Mexican Tuna boat and
brought back haunting video footage of the brutal and unnecessary
slaughter of thousands of dolphins in Tuna nets. This footage
was the catalyst that allowed the public to finally know
the truth about commercial tuna fishing operations and their
"accidental" byproduct of killing dolphins. The
public responded by demanding new "dolphin-safe"
fishing techniques to be adopted by the fishing industry.
Ric O'Barry - Recipient of the United Nations Environmental
Award. Ric is an anti-captivity activist with The
Dolphin Project, and author of the books "Behind
The Dolphin Smile" and "To Free A Dolphin."
Ric was the original trainer of the dolphins for the television
show "Flipper" in the 1960's until he realized
that it was not ethical to capture dolphins from their wild
environment and force them to live in small chlorinated
tanks to do tricks for human amusement. O'Barry was one
of the first individuals to rehabilitate and release captive
dolphins back into the wild, something that was thought
impossible until then.
Scott Trimingham - President and founder of Natureguard,
an environmental group based in Southern California. Scott
served as the West Coast Director of the Sea
Shepherd Conservation Society for nine years until he
founded his own nonprofit environmental organization.
Brenda Killian - Associate Director of the International
Marine Mammal Project. It is part of Brenda's job to travel
to the different canneries owned and operated by the large
tuna fishing companies to make sure they are complying with
their "dolphin-safe" policy.
