DOLPHIN AND WHALE PHOTO ID WORK

Photo identification of individual dolphin and whale species is a valuable tool in determining the size and change in the populations of various species of marine mammals, as well as tracking the movements of individuals. Tail flukes and dorsal fins help identify individual dolphins and whales much like fingerprints identify individual humans.

In conjunction with Reverie Productions and other organizations, the MMSC is recording this important information about Blue Whales, Fin Whales, Humpback Whales, Gray Whales, Orcas, Rissos Dolphins, Bottlenose Dolphins, Pacific White Sided Dolphins as well as many other species.
